Today we have electric lamps, fluorescent lamps etc.
But the first electric lamp was invented by the prince of inventions Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931). His most useful invention was electric bulb.
He started work on the lamp in 1878. He tested nearly 2500 materials for the filament of the lamp before discovering carbonized bamboo fiber.
Today tungsten wires are used for filaments of electric bulbs. Here the emission of light is by a substance because of its high temperature known as incandescence. Edison's bulb is called incandescent lamp that is a lamp in which light is produced by heating some substance to a white or red heat.
Fluorescent lamp is a vapor discharge lamp having the inside of the bulb or tube coated with fluorescent materials so that ultra violet radiation from the discharge is converted to light of an acceptable color.
